A vocal politician from Central Kenya has opposed the push to impeach Deputy President William Ruto.
The calls to remove Ruto from office were heightened on Sunday by politicians allied to Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party during a political rally in Nyanza.
Led by Siaya Senator James Orengo, the leaders declared the DP unfit to be President Uhuru Kenyatta's principal assistant for allegedly being linked to massive corruption.
Speaking when they campaigned for ODM candidate in the upcoming Ugenya parliamentary seat by-election, the politicians said they will work with a section of Jubilee Party leaders to ensure Ruto is removed from power.
"The DP can also be removed for gross misconduct. The threshold for the removal of Deputy President on constitutional grounds is much lower than going through a criminal trial or prosecution," said Orengo, as quoted by the Standard.
However, former Mukurwe-ini MP Kabando Wa Kabando has asked the Senate Minority Leader not to initiate the DP's impeachment saying it would be "futile".
In a tweet on Monday, the former legislator said Ruto should be removed through a judicial process initiated by investigative agencies; the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) and Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).
"My comrade Senior Counsel James Orengo's impeachment notion against William Ruto (is) ill-conceived, populist, futile. EACC, DCI and DPP are ably doing their work. DP deserves fair judicial trial Because of Ruto’s self-incrimination, in the court of public opinion he’s in Waterloo, doldrums," Kabando Tweeted.
