A 31-year-old woman has gone into hiding after she was caught stealing her neighbour’s Sukuma wiki at Nyamokenye village in Nyamira County.
Peter Morira said he caught the suspect, Mary Kemunto stealing kales at 9 pm on Sunday.
“I was returning home when I spotted a person at the sukuma wiki farm. I went straight into the house to pick a torch to see who the person was at the farm at night. I was shocked when I saw Kemunto, my closest neighbour and family friend stealing sukuma wiki,” he said.
Morira said Kemunto escaped into darkness and abandoned a leso which she was intending to use to carry the kales to her home.
Area assistant chief Nicholas Bichanga said the suspect’s leso was recovered and shall be used as exhibit once she is arrested as she is still at large.
BIchage said he was shocked to learn of the incident because Kemunto has been a good woman.
“Kemunto must have joined a bad group which is advising her wrongly. Instead of growing kales on her fertile farm, she decided to steal from her neighbour. Her leso is with me and once she will be arrested, it will be used as exhibit to charge her in court,” he said.
He called on women to work hard and grow their own vegetables and stop stealing.
The chief said it is shameful that women in the village have ventured into criminal activities which he said the law will not condone.
