The department of forestry at the Coast is blaming the Kenyan judicial system and county government of Kilifi for not assisting in the fight against charcoal burning in Kilifi.
Speaking at Kamale in Magarini, Kilifi County after a forest operation in the Dakacha Community Woodland, the acting coast forest commander, Harrison Afuata said on Wednesday that the county government has been mobilising residents to go on with cutting down trees in the Dakacha Community Woodland.
“These community forests are fully under the county government. Instead of protecting them, we are surprised to have noted that the county government is advising the community members to clear the forests to plant pineapples and cassava,” said Afuata.
He said that the department would not tolerate the ongoing destruction of the community forest, even though the judiciary and the county government go on sleeping on the illegal activity.
Afuata added that the forest department would front its officers to the forests and forcefully loot out all the charcoal burners.
“We are going to eject all the charcoal burners from these forests so that the forests will be under the Kenya Forest Service if the security committee will approve this.
