Migori Governor Okoth Obado was after all unhappy with Sharon Otieno's unborn baby, Director of Public Prosecution Noordin Haji has said.
But in a rebuttal, the govenor through his lawyer Cliff Ombeta said the county boss 'had no problem with the relationship and and was ready to take care of the baby'.
"He never had any problem and that is why he even offered to buy her a piece of land in Migori. He was ready to take care of them."
Mr. Obado, who has since been charged with murder, will know the fate of his bail application on Tuesday.
But in a statement on Sunday, Haji claimed that the governor, embarrassed with the pregnancy, was determined to eliminate it to avoid political backlash.
"We established that the governor was in an intimate relationship with the deceased that led to pregnancy.
"Those linked to murder are his close associates and they did it to avoid ridicule and possible political backlash," he said.
Besides Obado, his aides Michael Oyamo and Caspal Obiero have since been charged with murder of aiding and abetting murder.
Also in custody are his bodyguard Elvis Omondi and taxi driver Jackson Gombe, who apparently spilled beans to the detectives in the mysterious murder.
