Fishermen in Lamu East Constituency have a reason to smile after the County Government of Lamu in partnership with the Kenya Red Cross Society distributed fishing gears and outboard engines to them.
The exercise which was led by Lamu Governor Fahim Twaha alongside Kenya Red Cross Secretary-General Dr Abbas Gullet over 340 households in Mtangawanda receive outboard engines and another 59 households in Ndununi, receive fishing gears.
Speaking during the exercise on Tuesday, Dr Gullet said the equipment which include cooler boxes, nets, hooks, and diving sets among other items will improve how the communities carry out fishing activities, enabling them to go further in the ocean thus increasing their catch, thanks to funding from the International Committee of the Red Cross.
Gullet asked youth in Lamu to shun from drug abuse and embrace fishing, saying it has helped boost tourism across Lamu.
Governor Twaha on his part pledged to work closely with the humanitarian organisation, saying he will ensure youth from Lamu are sponsored to various programmes offered by the organisation.
