Just hours after the Nairobi CBD matatu ban took effect, Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko has sent an urgent apology Nairobians over the Monday morning confusion. In a statement, the City governor revealed that the ban was not a punishment but an initiative to bring sanity to the city roads.
"It's a good thing," he said of the ban that has seen major roads into the city clogged, adding, "but as you know, all good things are painful. The aim is not to punish the same people who voted for us" the Nairobi governor said as quoted by the Nation
Sonko further added that his government has laid down proper plans to decongest the city, calling on city residents to support him in the initiative.
"It is just but a matter of time and things will improve here," added Sonko, calling for commuter support to ensure the ban realizes its core objective.
Even as Sonko makes his apology, a section of concerned city politicians led by Senator Johnson Sakaja have since faulted the decision terming it premature and unfair to commuters.
"As I said yesterday and before. The move by @MikeSonko to ban matatus from the CBD is premature, and unfair to ordinary citizens. You don’t ban matatus before providing alternatives for commuters. MUST BE RESCINDED immediately and proper planning done. #MatatuCBDBan," Sakaja tweeted.
