Mr Boaz Kemboi, who works for a communication company within the building on the third floor, said two of assailants tried to gain access to his offices but could not manage because they didn't have swiping cards.

"They tried to gain entry but couldn't manage. The doors are automated and without a swiping machine, you can't gain access. They tried to shoot but still, the door is metallic thus our safety," Mr Kemboi told the Standard.

According to Mr Kemboi, after minutes of trying in vain, the attackers gave up and moved to the forth floor as they exchanged fire with security officers who had gained entry into the building.

Further, he said, most of the people in the building ran to the upper floors when they realized that they were under attack, adding that many could still be trapped inside.

"Many people rushed up for their safety. Even one of my colleagues is trapped up there and he is not picking calls. We still have many people trapped within the building," he said.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i on Tuesday said the building had been secured from the attackers, adding that security forces were in the final stages of the operation.

However, he did not immediately inform the country about casualties even though as eyewitnesses claimed that at least five people were killed on the spot.
