The incident happened on Monday morning in Kisii town.

Margaret Obwocha was attacked by members of the public after she stole a client’s mobile phone.

“Mrs. Obwocha kept a mobile phone for her client, Vincent Ongoncho, who abandoned it when he came to buy a drink at her shop. The customer returned to demand the phone but she refused to give him saying the customer didn’t leave the phone there,” said John Nyagaka.

Nyagaka said Ongoncho alerted other traders who unanimously agreed to search the woman's shop. It is at this point that the mobile phone in question was found hidden under a crate of sodas.

The angry traders descended on the woman with kicks and blows thereafter prompting police intervention.

Area police boss Francis Nguli, said the woman was beaten mercilessly before she was rescued by police officers who were on patrol.

“The woman sustained injuries on her head, hands, and knees and was rushed to Hema hospital for treatment,” he noted.

He urged residents to surrender suspects to police and stop taking the law into their hands.

The police boss warned traders against stealing from clients saying such traders will not be condoned in the area.
