The duo was nabbed at Kisayani market along Kibwezi-Kitui road at 4.00am on Thursday.

They had 10 kilograms of ivory worth Sh2 million street value during their arrest.

Kenya Wildlife Services spokesman Paul Masela said the suspects were ambushed by KWS officers from Tsavo West National Park following a tipoff from members of the public.

"Investigations are underway to establish where they got the tusks and if some other people were involved," Masela said.

The culprits Kioko Munguti (39) and Mwathe Kamwila (49) have been locked up at Kibwezi police station.

"The two from Mutha in Kitui County have been locked up at Kibwezi police station, they will be arraigned in court later in the day," Masela said.

Kenya Wildlife Services officers have threatened to arrest locals found in possession of such items.

Residents have been cautioned against poaching in the county and the entire Ukambani region.

The rhino and elephant species are the most affected animals with their population in Kenya going down every day due to illegal poaching.
