Owners and managers of six supermarkets in Nairobi whose meat sections are no longer operational have been summoned.

The court wants the managers to shed more light on the safety of the meat they have been selling in the recent past.

The owners of the stores have been summoned for allegedly breaching section 4 and 36 (1) of Food, Drugs and Chemical Substances Cap 254.

The arrest comes after an exposure on NTV showed that some of the supermarkets have been using chemicals when it comes to the preservation of meat. 

The government has since ordered investigations into the safety of the meat to ascertain whether they should be sold or not. 

Nairobi County Executive for health  Mohamed Dagane has confirmed the summon to the businessman as the county government continues with the crackdown on the Supermarkets selling meat believed to be preserved using chemicals deemed dangerous for human consumption.

“Those who fail to honour the summons will be arrested,” he said as quoted by Citizen Digital. 

The officials from Tuskys Supermarket Kenyatta Avenue, Naivas Supermarket Gateway Mall, Muthaiga Fine Meat Limited, Naivas Supermarket Rabai Road and Tusker Mattress in Eastlands.

The government has since asked the members of the General public to be cautious whenever they are purchasing red meat from any of the outlets or butcheries.
