Kiminini Member of Parliament Chris Wamalwa has weighed in on the looming leadership crisis in Nairobi County, following the arrest of Governor Mike Sonko.
Speaking on Monday during an interview on Citizen TV, Wamalwa said the Kenyan Constitution does not give President Uhuru Kenyatta powers to intervene in such a matter.
He said the Council of Governors' move to seek an audience with the president is an exercise in futility, because it is against the law of the land.
“I do not think there is a law that allows the president to intervene on matters such as in Nairobi County like the Council of Governors are calling for," he said.
He further noted that a vacancy will only arise in Nairobi, if Sonko is found guilty and convicted, adding that at the moment, Sonko is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
"Governor Sonko must still be taken as innocent until proven guilty. We need to see what he has been charged with and if he will be convicted before we can talk of a vacancy in Nairobi,” he argued.
“The crisis in Nairobi is a total paralysis. There is no deputy governor in office, I think the police need to have a ‘human face’ when arresting people,” he said.
