Villagers of Nyabigonkoru in Nyamondo, South Mugirango constituency in Kisii County are mourning the death of a middle-aged man who hanged himself after a disagreement with his wife on Monday.
Locals said the deceased Peter Machoni quarrelled with his wife Philomena Moraa over land.
“Machoni wanted to lease part of the family land but, Moraa turned down his proposal on grounds that he wanted to use the money to buy alcohol and give some to his prostitutes. Machoni then said his wife was rude to him when he refused his proposal,” said Edward Nyamwange.
Agnes Bitutu said Machoni stormed her house and told her that he was tired with life.
“The late came to my house and told me that his wife was rude to him. I tried to calm him down in vain,” she said.
Bitutu said the deceased left her house angered and went to his house where he hanged himself while his wife had gone to fetch water.
Area assistant chief Joshua Makori said the deceased body was discovered by Moraa.
“Moraa returned home from a water spring where she had gone to fetch water only to find her husband’s body hanging from the roof of their house at the sitting room,” he said.
Makori noted that cases of people taking their own lives are on the rise and called on members of the clergy to intervene and pray for families.
The deceased body was taken to Kisii Teaching and referral hospital morgue.
