Siaya Senator James Orengo is one of the men who were never in good terms with the government in the 90s and 80s, during the Nyayo era.
In 1982, then in his first term as the Ugenya lawmaker, he was forced to escape to Tanzania after conflicting with the Kenyan government.
Orengo abandoned his seat and shockingly escaped into the neighbouring country at a time when she had closed its border with Kenya over regional conflicts.
This also came after the government had confiscated Orengo's passport, in an apparent bid to keep him in the country.
The government was further confused by other rumours that the latter had escaped to either Libya or Zimbabwe, rendering the government confused on his whereabouts.
However, the man who is currently said to be eyeing the Siaya gubernatorial seat was comfortably settled in Tanzania.
While there, according to the Daily Nation, he was operating under the pseudo name Aggrey Oduori Kenga, apparently to protect his identity.
He enjoyed the protection of then Tanzanian president Julius Nyerere who refused to hand him over, alongside other rogue army men who had tried to overturn the Kenyan government before escaping to Tanzania.
However, Orengo and the others were handed back over in 1983, after some renegade soldiers staged a futile coup on Nyerere's leadership and escaped to Kenya.
Then President Daniel Moi and Nyerere, therefore, reached an agreement to swap the fugitives.
