Five people are receiving treatment at Machakos Level Five Hospital after they were brutally attacked by armed robbers in Masii, Mwala sub-county on Tuesday night.

According to eyewitnesses, the thugs broke into Club Hague in Masii market at around 2.00am and made away with valuables including television and alcohol.

The victims among them a night guard who sustained deep panga cuts on their bodies were rushed to the hospital by police with the residents' help.

The incident prompted protests by irate members of the public who barricaded the Kitui-Machakos Road on Wednesday morning.

The locals demonstrated against 'laxity' by police officers in the area.

They engaged police in running battles.

The residents blamed the officers for increased insecurity in the sub-county.

They accused police of sleeping on the job.

They blamed the police for failing to respond to the situation earlier enough and nab the perpetrators.

Police lobbed tear gas canisters to disperse the protesters who had lit tyres on the road.
