The Bill failed after only 187 MPs turned up in the House on Wednesday to vote. The Bill needed the support of 233 MPs to sail through.

The Amendment Bill sought to have the general election date changed from the first Tuesday of August to third Monday of December every election year.

Wamalwa in the Bill argued that election date in August affects the country’s school calendar and other activities.

If the Bill had been passed and signed into law, the term of current MPs would have extended by four months.

According to political analyst Peter Ngure, if the election Amendment Bill 2018 had passed and signed into law, then Kenyans would have been forced to go to a referendum.

Wamalwa has vowed to bring up the Bill at a later stage insisting that it is good for the country.

"I am going back to the drawing board and certainly will bring it (the Bill) back because I believe it is good for the country," he told journalists at Parliament buildings on Wednesday.
