Sonko took the move after receiving a tip-off from a member of the public that 12 bodies of infants were being packed in boxes.

The Nairobi county boss arrived at the hospital unexpectedly and exposed the shocking incident.

According to Sonko, the infants' corpses were being packed into nylon papers and boxes for disposal.

He claimed that the hospital management was rushing to conceal the incident.

"I came here (Pumwani hospital) riding on a bodaboda after receiving the shocking news and found the information I got was true," he told journalists.

It is alleged that the hospital generator went off on Sunday night making the incubators to fail.

Governor Sonko has since suspended three senior staff at the hospital and called for immediate investigations.

A section of Nairobi residents similarly want proper investigations conducted and action taken on people found to have neglected their duties resulting in the deaths.
