Mutula became more popular when he advocated for students to wear 'decent' skirts while going to school. Mutula who was then the Minister for Education was against the idea of students dressing like 'nuns'. 

Here are four interesting things you didn’t know about late Makueni Senator:

1. He repeated class one for lack of Sh15

The politician was forced to repeat class one after lacking sh15 for his school fees. His early life was not easy. His parents Mzee Wilson Kilonzo Musembi and Mama Rhoda Koki Kilonzo were not financially stable.

2. He got first class honours in law

 Mutula was among the most learned Kenyans. He graduated with a first class honours degree in law from University of Dar-es-Salaam

3. He was Moi’s legal adviser

 Mutula enjoyed class links with Former President Daniel Moi. He was his legal advisor. He once rewarded him for the post. He was introduced to Moi by Hosea Kiplagat, Moi's nephew.

4. He declined KANU’s offer for a political seat twice 

Mutula was not interested in politics at first. He refused to take over a political seat in 1992 and 1997.  He, however, made a U-turn on the same and threw himself to elective politics.

5. He spent Sh700,000 monthly on his three lions

Mutula owned three lions named Mutula, Nduku, and Sis. The Senator spent Sh700,000 monthly to feed the lions.
