Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu on Tuesday left the country for Nigeria as an election observer.
The country is scheduled to hold presidential and National Assembly elections this coming Saturday.
The first term governor joined the 38-member delegation from various parts of the world to oversee the exercise.
The team will be led by retired Botswana President Festus Mogae.
Ngilu is the only delegate from Kenya who will take part in the exercise following her nomination by the International Republican Institute (IRI) and the American based National Democratic Institute (NDI).
The governor's departure was reported by her office on Tuesday.
She was nominated due to her vast experience in the political arena.
Ngilu served as Kitui Central MP for four consecutive terms before she was appointed as the Lands Cabinet Secretary by President Uhuru Kenyatta.
She was, however, sacked over corruption claims.
Ngilu, also National Rainbow Coalition (Narc) leader created a name for herself when she tried to send retired President Daniel Moi home.
