A statement written governor Okoth Obado that turned out to be untrue landed him in detention, it has been established.
On Monday, the Migori governor will face murder charges over the death of his girlfriend, Sharon Otieno, whose mutilated body was retrieved from Kodera forest a fortnight ago.
At Kisumu's DCI headquarters, Obado insisted that he was away in Nairobi when Sharon was abducted by people believed to be his aides and subsequently killed.
But homicide detectives, who have been burning midnight oil, tracked Obado's phone and subsequently established that he was around Homa Bay, where the crime was committed.
His PA Michael Oyamo, bodyguard Elvis Omondi and county clerk Caspal Obiero have all been detained and they will face murder charges on Monday as well.
Mr. Obiero is the owner of the Toyota Fielder which was used in abducted of Sharon and journalist Barack Oduor, who would later escape by jumping out.
Oduor identified the vehicle which had gone missing after Sharon died only to resurface last Sunday before being driven to Nairobi.
The driver of the vehicle, Jackson Gombe was also arrested and is said to have spilled the beans about the mysterious murder to save himself from a possible death sentence.
In his statement, reports the Standard, he insisted that he wasn't aware of the plan to abduct the deceased, adding that he saw Mr. Obado at the crime scene where the lady was being tortured.
DNA tests carried out by detectives also established that Sharon's unborn baby was fathered by Governor Obado.
In a press conference last week, while admitting having had a relationship with Ms. Otieno, Obado denied any involvement in horrendous murder.
