While opening the conference which is themed “Leading the way to quality care as we move towards the provision of universal healthcare in Kenya”, Kilifi County Governor Amason Kingi said the country can only attain universal healthcare if the role played by midwives in the society is acknowledged.

"The County Government of Kilifi holds that Midwives play an integral part in giving life and as such, we have given our Midwives a central role in healthcare provision Countywide," he said.

He said his administration values the role played by midwives in the provision of quality healthcare services in the Country and has provided midwives with a conducive environment and equipped them with the relevant infrastructure to make their work seamless.

Governor Kingi indicated the move has greatly led to a significant drop in infant and maternal mortality rates in recent years as his administration makes plans to have county midwives occasionally taken for further training.

"We have provided our Midwives with a conducive environment and equipped them with the relevant infrastructure to make their work seamless," Kingi added on Thursday.

He further urged the National Government to listen to the midwives and see how they can divorce the curriculum of midwives from that of Nurses to enable young people to pursue midwifery as a dream career and create a pool of labour for the country's health facilities.
