The United States of America State Department has urged all American citizens to leave Iraq, following the killing of an Iranian General Qasem Soleimani, which has heightened tensions between the US and Iran.

Mr Soleimani was killed by an American airstrike at the Baghdad Airport.

"Due to heightened tensions in Iraq and the region, the U.S. Embassy urges American citizens to heed the January 2020 Travel Advisory and depart Iraq immediately. U.S. citizens should depart via airline while possible, and failing that, to other countries via land," the State Department said as quoted by Reuters.

This comes after the Islamic Republic of Iran vowed to retaliate to avenge the death of their top military general.

The US and Iran are locked in an ongoing diplomatic crisis that threatens to snowball into a military confrontation.

President  Donald Trump has been pursuing a maximum pressure strategy towards Iran.

Security experts have warned that the US-Iran row threatens global security.

The Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif termed the US strike as a "foolish escalation".

There are fears that Iran could target US interests in the coming days in retaliation for the death of Soleimani, who was said to be planning attacks on US interests.
