The funeral committee instituted to fundraise for the burial has accused social media users of frustrating efforts to raise funds.

The burial committee had revealed that the burial expenses for Sharon will amount to Sh1.1 million as the family announced that the deceased would be laid to rest on October 19.

Committee chairman Elijah Opiyo claimed that fake and outrageous funeral budgets were doing rounds on social media.

Mr Opiyo said some unknown people on social media are sharing the fake budget in an effort to discourage potential well-wishers from contributing to the funds' drive.

The committee chairman denied social media reports that they were asking for more than Sh2.5 million for the burial.

Items of the fake budget include a Sh200,000 imported coffin, mourners hired from Ghana at a cost of Sh300,000 and outsourced caterers from Tanzania at Sh200, 000.

“The fake budget doing rounds on social media is making guests turn down invites for a funds drive slated for Sunday, October 14, at Magare village in Homa Bay County,” he said.

Mr Opiyo had earlier said that they are seeking more than Sh1 million because they are expecting a high number of visitors during the burial.

Sharon was murdered and her body was found at the Kodera Forest.

Suspects in the gruesome killing are facing serious charges at a court of law.
