Before his death in 2012, former Vice President and Interior Cabinet Minister George Saitoti was deemed one of the most mysterious and paranoid politicians in the nation.
Another of his characteristics was secrecy, which on most occasions comes in handy in the political field where players are surrounded by enemies, known and unknown.
One of such was in 1990 when he was then the Vice President, when President Daniel Moi revealed his secret, humiliating and exposing him at the time.
Saitoti had been poisoned at a hotel in Muthaiga, Nairobi, an ordeal that almost took his life and put him on bed for months, but he completely denied it until Moi let the cat out of the bag.
Those close to him said that he was in a pathetic situation, and that his skin was literally peeling off, but he would would rubbish the claims as 'rumours' upon his return months later.
He only admitted it after Moi linked the culprits to those in the murder of former Foreign Affairs Minister Robert Ouko years earlier, claiming that the people were back to kill his Vice.
However, Saitoti refused to have his attempted murder case to be linked to that of Ouko, saying that he could not confirm Moi's claims about the culprits as he was unconscious when Ouko was murdered.
He reportedly refused to eat anyhowly ever since, and could only take his meals at a single trusted hotel owned by businessman Jimi Wanjigi when away from home, reports the Nation.
He was also later involved in a disagreement with Moi who preferred President Uhuru Kenyatta as his successor over him, and also found himself at the middle of the Goldenbert scandal when he was the Finance Minister.
He died in a copter crash alongside his assistant Orwa Ojode in June 2012, then as the Interior Cabinet Minister.
Pathological tests conducted on their bodies indicated that the two might have been subjected to carbon monoxide inhalation before the crash.
