Officers who testified in court on Friday narrated how they were forced to receive orders from one Josphat Mwangi Maina, who identified himself as a Senior Superintendent of Police.

Maina, alias Baba Maina also served as Gakuru's Private Assistant, with his purported SSP rank making it hard for the other officers, most of them corporals, to question him.

Corporals Ahmed Abdi Khaif and Samson Lekol told Nyeri Chief Magistrate Wendy Kagendo that the man who said that he comes from the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) was in charge of other officers serving Gakuru.

The claims were confirmed by Gakuru's sister Margaret Wambui who said that he identified himself as an SSP at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to her.

However, while denying claims of being an impostor, Maina said that he was only working in the governor's office owing to their long friendship, and is a class four dropout.

He added that he has known the late Gakuru since 1997, and had participated in his 2013 and 2017 campaigns, while the officers said that they never realised that he was a fake officer.

Maina insisted that he is a businessman in Nairobi.
