The United States through the Department of State on Monday evening announced a travel ban against former Attorney General of Kenya who is the Busia Senator Amos Wako for allegedly engaging in corruption.
The travel ban which extends to Wako's wife Flora Ngaira and their son Julius Wako was outlined in the under Section 7031(c) of the Department of State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs Appropriations Act, 2019 (Div. F, P.L. 116-6).
The announcement was made by US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo.
"Section 7031(c) provides that, in cases where the Secretary of State has credible information that officials of foreign governments have been involved in significant corruption, those individuals and their immediate family members are ineligible for entry into the United States," Pompeo said as quoted by The Star.
The US Secretary of State is empowered by the law to announce such bans in public or private against corrupt individuals and their immediate family members.
“The law also requires the Secretary of State to publicly or privately designate such officials and their immediate family members. In addition to the designation of Mr Wako, the Department is also publicly designating Wako’s wife, Flora Ngaira, and son, Julius Wako,” the statement read as quoted by Capital FM.
The United States nonetheless vowed to support Kenya not only in fighting corruption but also in punishing corrupt individuals.
