A section of residents of Kokuro in Awendo sub-county on Wednesday protested against a Chinese company constructing Rongo-Migori highway.
The locals were demanding that they be given casual jobs in the ongoing construction.
According to Joseph Juma, one of the locals, the company has brought on board people from other neighbouring counties to do jobs which they can do.
Juma claimed locals had been kept in the dark yet they previously agreed with the construction company that they would be hired when the construction reaches the area.
"We were promised jobs when construction reaches this area but we are surprised to see foreigners working in the sites. Some are of Tanzanian origin," he said.
The sentiments were echoed by Boniface Okoth who said that the locals will not tire until some of them are hired for the casual jobs in the road construction site.
The demand comes several weeks after a similar peaceful protest was witnessed in Ranen forcing the construction company to hire over ten locals for various casual jobs.
According to the locals in the area, they are not against non-locals working in their regions but they want to be given their portion during the hiring of both skilled and non-skilled personnel.
Efforts to get a response from the management of the construction company were futile.
