Kenyan athletes shone in the 2018 Berlin Marathon, which took place on Sunday, September 16th. However, it was Eliud Kipchoge who carried the day as he not only won the 2018 BMW Berlin Marathon men's race but also broke the world record.

Kipchoge, known to many as the greatest marathoner of all time ran the marathon in 2:01:39, breaking Dennis Kimetto’s record of 2:02:57 set 2014.

The 33-year-old will walk home with not less than Ksh. 10 million. In the Berlin Marathon, the winner is given 50,000 US dollars each (Ksh. 5 million). However, if one sets a new world record, another 69,000 USD (Sh7 million) is added. 

This is the amount Kipchoge will be given from the Berlin Marathon organizers. However, he will also receive other prizes from his sponsors. 

According to research done by Citizen, different marathons have their different prizes for winners. 

Winners in the Dubai Marathon walk home with $200,000 (Sh20 million) and another $100,000 (Sh10 million) for setting the new world record. 

Winners in the Boston Marathon walk home with $150,000, while in the New York City Marathon, Chicago Marathon, Tokyo Marathon, London Marathon, winners of the races walk home with $130,000, $100,000, $80,000 and $55,000 (Ksh.5.5 million) respectively.
