Sponsor is a local slang in Kenya that is referred to an older man who spoils young ladies mostly of the university-going age with lavish and expensive gifts in exchange for sexual favours.

This emerging habit has taken over the country by storm, and it's considered a trend among many young girls in universities who in their 'defence' have to look for alternative sources of cash.

'Sponsors' are fairly financially stable guys or rich and influential men who have steady and settled families, but prey on the desperate girls because they (girls) are more willing to be adventurous in bed.

The following are the signs to look out for to know whether she has a sponsor:

1. She owns expensive gadgets

Most of these girls are always given little cash as pocket money with their parents which in most cases can't even last them the whole semester, leave alone enable them to buy expensive phones.

However, you will find them owning expensive, high tech phones, tablets or laptops that their sponsors bought for them. If asked, they will silence you with "It was a Christmas gift."

2. She randomly disappears during weekends and holidays

She will come up with an excuse that she is going for a school trip over the weekend, or she is going home for the weekend, only to see her on Instagram and Facebook in high-end 5-star hotels and resorts.

Oftenly, they splash their Facebook and Instagram pages with expensive wines and exotic culinary dishes with names that you can hardly pronounce without biting your tongue.

3. They act suspiciously when picking certain calls

They'd rather burn in hell than let you hear them talk with their sponsor, whom they mostly claim is a distant uncle, only to learn later that her mother was an only child.

They are very secretive and possessive of their phones that they set passwords or patterns that would even dumbfound Einstein himself.

So my guys, be on the lookout for the above signs. Don't be played. Wisen up and join the dots.
