Migori Governor Okoth Obado is likely to join the anti-referendum bandwagon seeking to suppress the rising attempts to change several clauses of the constitution.
This will first of all be fuelled by his apparent political rivalry with opposition leader Raila Odinga who is leading the pro-referendum team.
And having brought himself out as an anti-Odinga campaigner in the region in the recent past, he will have it harder backing the push.
Obado’s rebellious nature began when he opposed Raila’s Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) choice of former Cabinet Minister Ochillo Ayacko for the concluded senatorial race.
Aware that joining Raila will portray him as a victim of Raila’s influence in the region and a weaker leader, Obado who has nothing to lose, being on his second and last term, he will be forced to oppose him once again.
Also, fresh from jail in line with his alleged involvement in the murder of Rongo University student Sharon Otieno, Obado is most likely bitter with Odinga for failing to intervene for him.
Raila and his Orange team snubbed Obado throughout his 33 days in prison, a factor that could lead the Governor into opposing him as a way of revenging and frustrating him.
Being the most popular politician in the Luo Nyanza region currently courtesy of his controversial lifestyle, a fail by Odinga will bring him closer to the Luo Nyanza kingpin slot.
And since this seems the best chance to realize this, he will give his all towards collapsing Raila’s moves in a bid to bundle him out of the picture and take over his slot.
He will be better off on the opposing side at a time when the entire Luo Nyanza brigade seems to be sharing in Raila's ideologies with regards to the referendum.
The changes have as well been opposed by forces close to Deputy President William Ruto.
