A casket believed to have been used for the burial of a school girl at Mosobeti region in West Mugirango was recovered 13 kilometers away without the body of the deceased.
The bizarre incident shocked hundreds of Borabu residents at Chinunda village even as the debate on witchcraft escalated on social media.
Mochumbe Maronya, the grandfather of the school girl, positively identified the coffin, adding that his granddaughter had been buried on Tuesday after dying out of a mysterious disease.
"This is the coffin we used to bury her. Her death was surrounded with controversy and it's quite discouraging to recover the coffin without the body.
"I can confirm that we noticed something unusual on the grave and seems they took the body. This is quite embarrassing habit by someone who doesn't want to change," he said.
While it's not clear where the body was taken, some community leaders argue that witches usually take human flesh, a claim which can't be substantiated though.
Enchoro Chief James Orina confirmed the incident, adding that the coffin was positively identified by the family of the deceased.
"The family has identified the coffin so we can't deny. Why they exhumed the body is a question to be answered by those who practice witchcraft," he said.
Cases of witchcraft in the vast Gusii region are not synonymous since at a church not far away from the scene, a miraculous photograph of witches with body of a dead person is reportedly on the church wall.
