A section of politicians from the North Rift region now says the country is not ready to conduct a referendum.
Speaking in Kesses constituency on Friday, the politicians led by West Pokot Woman Representative Lilian Tomitom said there is no reason for a referendum at this time.
Tomitom, a Jubilee legislator further said they will not allow few individuals after political positions to push the country to waste the resources.
“Tumetoka uchaguzi juzi na ndio kazi imeanza, sioni sababu ya referendum. (We are just from an election na development work has just begun I don’t see the need for a referendum)” said Tomitom.
“Tuko na shida ya pesa, tutatumia pesa gani kwa hii referendum? (The country is facing financial problems, where will we get the money to fund a referendum?),” she asked.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairman Wafula Chebukati was recently quoted saying it will cost the country up to Sh12 billion to conduct a referendum.
Similar sentiments were shared by Mosop MP Vincent Tuwei who claimed individuals who failed in the 2017 general elections are out to find a way into government positions.
Tuwei further dismissed those pushing for a referendum to reduce the number of MPs.
“If boundaries are to be reviewed then we need to make constituencies smaller not big,” noted the MP.
