Kisii Senator Sam Ongeri has raised doubts over national census population results that were released on Monday by Kenya National Bureau of Statistics.
In the outcome by KNBS, Kenya currently has 47.6 million people, an increase of around 9 million since the last census conducted in 2009.
Curiously, Nyamira County had 605,000 people, an increase of paltry 7,000 people, results which have since caused uproar among residents.
Senator Ongeri on Monday protested the results, arguing that it's impossible for Kisii and Nyamira to have a combined population of 1.8 million people.
These figures are not adding up. It's not possible for the counties to have such a small increase. The figures are inaccurate," said the veteran leader.
According to Ongeri, the results will affect allocation and distribution of national resources, adding that the figures should be urgently interrogated.
He said: "This will affect resource allocation and this will affect development. The area is densely populated. The figures are not a true picture of what should be."
Nyamira leaders led by Nation Media Group journalist Nyambega Gisesa also protested the census results, arguing that the KNBS might have erred somewhere.
Leadership from both counties mobilised people to be enumerated in August, with Senator Ongeri leading the campaigns. The region is projected to have voter population of 1.3 million people by 2022.
