Salt is one of the most important ingredients in the kitchen. It transforms a meal from drab one to an edible one. Sometimes a pinch becomes too much, making food nearly inedible. In such a circumstance, hope should be lost. There are things you can do to salvage that meal. These are:
Put a raw potato in your soup
Peel the potato and dip inside your meal. The starch in potato will absorb the salt in your meal through the process of diffusion. Basically the salt will move from a region of high concentration to a region of less concentration. Discard the potatoes when they are tender.
Make more of your recipe
It is limited to a circumstance where you have more of the ingredients. In this case you can cook more of the meal then mix it the over salted one until you achieve the correct salt level.
Bulk up your meal
Here, you add quick cooking ingredients such as vegetables to your dish. It will even up the salt level and make the meal palatable.
Add liquid to your dish
Be careful not to add water. Water will dilute the taste and you will end up with an underwhelming meal. Instead, use unsalted broth, diced tomatoes or even wine.
Re-season your meal
This is the last resort. Add spices to your meal in order to regain its flavour in case it lost its taste after bulking up and adding liquid.
