Maalim says that the referendum should be about cushioning Kenyans from the harsh economy and strengthening leadership and governance.

The former MP says that Kenyans should reject the referendum push if those advocating for it want to create more political seats.

“We don’t need more political seats and the focus on the referendum should be on reducing some elective seats,” he said on Wednesday.

Maalim said that he will support the referendum only if it is on cutting down on the ballooning wage bill.

The referendum push is gaining momentum with several leaders among them former Prime Minister Raila Odinga backing it.

Raila says that referendum is unstoppable and that is part of the unity deal with President Uhuru Kenyatta in the famous March 9 handshake.

However, a section of politicians led by Garissa MP Aden Duale alleges that the referendum push is about creating more seats.

Duale claims that Raila and other politicians pushing for referendum want more seats created in their favor ahead of the 2022 general election.

The Garissa MP also alleges a plot to merge some counties in North Eastern.

Duale has vowed to campaign against the plebiscite.
