Bananas are sweet, sugary and tasty to everyone and have nearly zero health hazards to the normal functioning of the body but should they be consumed on an empty stomach?
It is in bananas that you will find calcium, magnesium, fiber, and sugar, each of which is essential to the body. Calcium and magnesium keep the body strong, fiber is key in the digestion of food while sugar gives energy to the body.
As Kenyans, we are fond of quenching our hunger by eating 2 to 3 bananas while we wait for main meals. However, according to scientists, bananas should not be consumed on an empty stomach.
There are three main reasons why bananas should not be consumed on an empty stomach namely:
1. The high amount of natural sugars present in bananas may cause type 2 diabetes as the sugar is absorbed into the bloodstream undiluted.
2. Bananas are acidic and can, therefore, cause stomach problems such as ulcers.
3. Being that they contain high amounts of magnesium and potassium, these two minerals may become imbalanced in the blood posing harm to the heart.
Scientists advise that you consume bananas after meals to cure or prevent constipation since they have high fiber content which speeds up the rate at which digestion takes place.
