A heated debate of whether Malindi Sub-county will have a by-election or not is looming barely a day after ODM National Executive Council (NEC) adopted the disciplinary committee report that recommended for the expulsion of ‘rebel’ MP Aisha Jumwa.
This comes after a section of Malindi residents aligned to Jumwa on Friday refuted the possibility of a by-election saying that they will not allow anything related to a by-election.
Led by Boaz Kiir, the frustrated residents said that despite being agitated by the party’s decision, they will not heed its request, thereby telling ODM secretary general Edwin Sifuna that they will seek justice in court.
Boaz said, “the people of Malindi are preparing for an election in 2022, not anything to do with a by-election. And we are very firm on that.”
Boaz added that Sifuna and other party officials were being lured by Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho and his followers to expel Jumwa so as to lose the Parliamentary Service Commission seat in favour of Likoni MP Mishi Mboko.
“Since we have realised that the PSC seat is the problem, we are therefore asking Mishi Mboko, who has been a very close ally of Aisha Jumwa, to humbly request for the seat from Jumwa, and it will be passed to her peaceful, rather than lighting unnecessary politics,” he added.
The residents said that PSC is an independent commission that cannot be interfered by a political party, thereby asking ODM to retrace its roots to demote Jumwa if they are regretting taking her to PSC, hence cannot be de-whipped.
They told ODM officials to go to court or write to the president so as to form a tribunal for Aisha to be kicked out of PSC per the law, adding that they will not entertain seeing their MP victimised by the party.
Fuad Kombe, a resident, faulted ODM’s NEC for allegedly failing to rectify the disciplinary committee’s report despite having the capacity to do so.
"Instead, it chose to expel her. We recognise Aisha Jumwa as the living daring Mekatilili wa Menza who believes in service delivery. We are telling those behind all these woes, mostly those from Mombasa county, that it’s not yet over, we are coming for you,” added Kombe.
