President Uhuru Kenyatta has today launched new generation Kenyan currency in accordance with Constitution.The currency launched by the Head of State will have symbols not portraits of persons.
Speaking during the event at the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) headquarters in Nairobi, President Kenyatta noted that he was glad that his government was achieving another milestone.
"I am extremely pleased that today we can achieve yet another milestone, launching the family of new generation coins. They honor the wishes of the people of Kenya in regard to their national currency as expressed in the constitution."We shall be unveiling a set of new generation coins which are compliant with our 2010 constitution of Kenya," he said.
The president applauded CBK for ensuring that the new coins have features that cater for people with special needs.
"I am also informed that the coins contain features that make them more accessible to visually impaired persons and I applaud you for that," he said.
On his part, CBK Governor Njoroge noted that the new coins have been gazetted and will start being circulated today.
"Governor @njorogep announces that the new-generation coins have been gazetted and will begin to circulate today," CBK tweeted.
