Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu has defied calls to shun 2022 campaigns by President Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga.
Waititu, together with other leaders, had accompanied the deputy president William Ruto to a church service and a fundraiser in Kakamega.
Speaking at the event, the governor said that it was time to support 'the son of the poor' to be the president of Kenya.
He pledged support for Mr.Ruto saying he is capable of leading the country after president Kenyatta.
"We have decided that we are going to be with the son of the poor. We will support him and make sure he leads the country in 2022," said Waititu.
Most leaders who attended the function appeared to support Mr.Ruto's position on referendum calls saying it should not be carried out on grounds of creating extra posts and barring people like the deputy president from running for the presidency.
They added that dynasties should pave way for the sons of the poor to be given a chance to lead.
The move was contrary to the directive issued by president Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga who have been calling on leaders to avoid early campaigns as it was time to deliver to the electorate on pledges made during the last campaigns.
