Former Sports Principal Secretary (PS) Richard Ekai and two former senior officials in the Ministry of Sports have been charged with mismanagement and embezzlement of public funds amounting to Sh55 Million during the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
Ekai and the two (Harun Komen- former director of administration and Francis Kanyili- former National Olympics Committee (NOCK) Secretary General) were also charged with abuse of office and willful failure to adhere to laws on the management of public funds.
The trio pleaded not guilty to the charges before Milimani Anti-Corruption Magistrate Douglas Ogoti.
The Magistrate released the three on Sh2 Million bond with a surety of similar amount, a personal bond of Sh1 Million and alternative cash bail of Sh1 Million.
The court ordered the accused persons to deposit their passports in court. The case will be mentioned on November 16.
The Magistrate at the same time ordered former Sports Cabinet Secretary Hassan Wario and other suspects who failed to appear in court to surrender to the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) before Thursday, October 18 for processing.
The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji had approved the arrest and prosecution of the officials over the alleged Sh55 Million scandal.
Wario who is currently Kenya’s Ambassador to Austria is expected to plead to the graft charges on October 19.
