The County Government of Taita Taveta is taking steps to operationalise Taveta and Voi towns to spur good governance and growth of the urban areas.
The towns that have already been conferred the status and gazetted in 2017 will borrow some concepts from the Kenya Urban Support Programme (KUSP) which is implementing the operationalisation of the Municipality of Mwatate.
The Municipal Charter for Mwatate Municipality was submitted to the County Assembly last week for approval.
A section of KUSP Project coordinating team will work with the town administrators and other officials to fast track and update the town management charters, facilitate the recruitment of Town Management Committees and engage the general public on the functional structures.
In a meeting chaired by Deputy Governor Majala Mlagui, it was revealed that the team will also review the applicable legislation framework like Urban Areas and Cities Act and advise the County Executive accordingly.
Public participation meetings will also be held at the grassroots to sensitise and provide information on the benefits of the towns to the residents.
Other officials in the meeting were Finance and Planning CeC Dr. Vincent Masawi, Lands, Mining, Environment and Natural Resources CeC Getrude Shuwe, Tourism, Service Delivery, Industrialisation and Energy CeC Janet Mwawasi, Economic Advisor to the Governor Sylvester Mwaliko, Administrator at the Office of the County Secretary John Mwakima, County Legal Director Edward Chahilu, Taveta Town Administrator Rashid Shariff and his Voi counterpart Mwanjala.
