Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho and Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula have joined other leaders in mourning the demise of first native African mayor of Nairobi Charles Wanyoike Rubia.

The two leaders took to social media on Monday to mourn the deceased. 

Wetangula, also the Ford Kenya party leader said that the death of Charles Wanyoike Rubia is a big blow not only for the family but also for the entire nation.

"RIP Charles Rubia. Your role in the second liberation of our country shall be remembered, treasured and respected," he tweeted.

On his part, Joho said that he learned about the death of the former mayor with deep shock and said that Kenya will truly miss the deceased.

"It is with great sadness and sorrow that I learned of the passing on of one of the true fighters of the second liberation, Hon. Charles Wanyoike Rubia who served as the first African mayor of Nairobi and a member of parliament for Starehe constituency from 1969 to 1988. He shall forever be remembered for his efforts and contribution towards the devolved system of governance," he said in a post on Facebook

Joho added: "Kenya has not only lost a leader but also a father. On behalf of the people of Mombasa, my family and on my own behalf, I wish to convey my heartfelt condolences and pray that may the almighty give to his family and friends strength during this trying moment. May his soul rest in eternal peace."

Former Nairobi Governor Dr Evans Kidero and Former Senator Boni Khalwale also sent their messages of condolence to the family of Charles Wanyoike Rubia.

"I am truly sorry to hear about the loss of the first African Mayor of Nairobi Hon Charles Wanyoike Rubia. He was a great man and he will truly be missed and will always be remembered. May Your soul be at peace with our heavenly Father," Kidero posted on Facebook

"It's sad & hard to accept the death of Hon Charles Rubia. A political giant! In him we celebrate the first African Mayor for Nairobi, MP for Starehe (1969-1988), he who agitated for en gave us multiparty democracy for which he was detained by Moi in 1990. RIP papa," Khalwale tweeted.

6Charles Wanyoike Rubia died at his Karen home in Nairobi on Monday aged 96.
