Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi has launched the 16 days of activism against Gender-Based Violence (GBV).
The governor said his government has already launched a committee which will come up with a report that will assist in coming up with clear strategies and programmes to curb these outdated vices.
He said government has also completed the mapping of Kilifi County and are set to start a mentorship programme to deploy social workers in every village to mentor families on matters of gender-based violence matter.
"There is a need for us to strengthen our social fabric as a community and care for the well-being of our young girls," he said on Friday.
Speaking during the launch at Matsangoni primary school, in Kilifi North Constituency, Kingi said his administration will also deliberate with the County Assembly and impose a ban on the consumption of stimulants like Miraa (Khat) popularly known as 'Mugukaa', saying it has been destroying families in Kilifi County "as well as our young men who no longer see to pursue any dream or purpose."
While calling on all stakeholders to work in unison in order to shun gender-based violence, early marriages, and teenage pregnancies in Kilifi, Governor Kingi asked the clergy to come out boldly against Miraa, saying it has turned out to be a curse to the society.
"I emphasise my unrelenting commitment towards curbing Gender-Based violence in Kilifi," he said.
The County Assembly of Mombasa already passed a motion to ban usage of the crop in the County.
