A Kisii based local politician allied to opposition NASA has opposed plans by the government to ban Probox cars.
Rachael Otundo who doubles as the Kisii County Governance Watch secretary general while speaking in Kisii town on Monday said the government should not ban the Probox cars.
She argued that several young people who have been working as Probox drivers will be rendered jobless once the Probox cars are banned.
"We can't afford to have a government blackmailing people. More jobs should be created for our people and not reducing the available jobs. I am strongly opposing the government's plan to ban Probox cars from our roads since many young people will lose jobs," she argued.
The vocal politician urged National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to issue licences to Probox drivers more especially those in Kisii County so that they can continue operating.
Ms. Otundo warned Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i against taking a hard stance on matatu businesses saying he will make more enemies than friends.
"I am appealing to our leaders to be at the forefront to ensure our jobless people are getting jobs and not losing their jobs," she added.
