Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula has made a first public appearance in parliament on Tuesday since reports linking him to the fake gold scam become the talk of the town.
During the Senate session, he eulogised the passing of ex-Minister and former Busia East (Currently Teso North and Teso South) MP Fredrick Oduya Oprong who died on Sunday morning after 25 years of struggle with a bullet being lodged in his brain.
The former Senate minority leader lamented how the government was paying the ex-MP a monthly pension allowance of Sh9,000 that he thought was too small given the fact that he had to cater for his medical expense and family.
"I talked to the family of the late Oduya Oprong. A man who served four terms has been earning a pension of Sh9,000 per month. That is what he has been living upon, the children have been unable to go to school," Wetangula lamented.
Wetangula suggested that the government and the Senate should draft a bill to ensure former leaders who were not contributing much to their retirement kitty during their times should have a budget set by the government for their families to use when they are gone.
"I want to urge the government and the majority leader we should bring a bill to this house so that even those (MPs) those days who were not able to make a major contribution toward their pension can also be factored in some way into the budget so that they can be given a decent sunset," he added.
