With the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party yet to recover from its unforseen loss in the Ugenya parliamentary by-election, this is a great opportunity for politicians to learn.

The party through its candidate Chris Karan lost in the Friday exercise, the seat instead going to Movement for Democracy and Growth (MDG) candidate David Ochieng'.

From here, politicians should note the point that political victory is won by addressing the hearts of individuals and not masses, and directly speaking to the interests of the voters.

This can be noted as despite holding colourful and heavily attended rallies, ODM never managed to win the race, while Ochieng who was not seen anywhere holding rallies won it.

Politicians should also realize that political positions are given to the humble, and not the most noisy or the one with the deepest pockets  or powerful friends and allies.

ODM's main undoing was the decision to turn the campaign rallies into attack arenas, and instead of selling their candidates' policies, was boasting about how it was going to win.

They also forgot what took them to Ugenya, and used the platform to attack and threaten Deputy President William Ruto of an impeachment, and have finally been punished.

The MDG candidate was on the other hand busy telling the voters what he will do for them, and was rewarded by being given the chance while ODM landed on the losing end.

Politicians must therefore know that elections are won on the basis of selling policies and not trying to impress the  masses by attacking the person (s) you think the people hate.

ODM lost despite having all the money needed and deploying all area politicians and at some point even the party leadership including Deputy Party Leader Wycliffe Oparanya.

Ochieng on the other hand had no powerful allies, but instead only the development record he made during his tenure between 2013 and 2017, a challenge to politicians.

They have to come to terms with the fact that winning a political contest lies in the contact one has with the voters and what he has done for them.
