Mutua said the Cabinet Secretary in charge of the ministries directly linked to the scandal should be sacked for sleeping on their jobs.

According to the Machakos governor, CSs are directly in charge of their ministries and should be held responsible when things go in the wrong direction.

Speaking on Radio Citizen on Friday, Mutua said that unless top people are sacked can charge in court, the war against corruption and contraband will not succeed.

“The president must crack the whip fearlessly and assure Kenyans of their safety in the wake of contraband sugar that is allegedly laced with mercury and copper,” Mutua said.

Governor Mutua said that it is time top government officials are held responsible for the mess happening in their dockets.

The Machakos governor said that arresting and prosecuting small people will not help in the fight against graft.

Mutua asked President Kenyatta to be ruthless if he wants to leave a good legacy in 2022.

“As it stands now, the president’s Big four development agenda is threatened by corruption and importation of fake products,” he said.

The government has intensified the crackdown on contraband sugar products across the country.

On Thursday, Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i revealed that other products in the market including cooking oil and rice might not be safe.

Early this week, Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) Managing Director Charles Ongwae alongside other officials were charged in court over the importation of substandard fertilizer said to have laces of mercury.
