Three Al-Shabaab terrorists have been killed following a gunfight between the Somalia-based military group and KDF soldiers operating under the AMISOM.

In a communication on Thursday morning, KDF said the incident which happened on Wednesday, March 13 at around 2pm at Bura Hache, Somalia, also saw one terrorist captured in-flight. 

The soldiers were in patrol before encountering a pocket of the Al-Shabaab terrorists.

"On Wednesday, 13 March 2019, at around 2pm, KDF soldiers under the AMISOM while on patrol, engaged a pocket of Al-Shabaab terrorists in the area of Bura Hache, Somalia," said KDF in an operational update.

The soldiers too managed to recover two AK-47 Rifles, 1 SLR and assorted ammunition. 

KDF underscored the need to remain vigilant and will continue to relentlessly pursue the terrorists to ensure peace and security of for Kenya as well as support AMISOM operations in order to stabilise Somalia.

The attack comes days after the new AMISOM Force Commander Lt Gen Tigabu Yilma made a familiarization visit to AMISOM Sector II Headquarters in Dhobley, Somalia where he was hosted by Sector II Commander Brigadier Dickson Ruto (on Sunday, March 3).

The Force Commander commended the milestones achieved so far by the Kenyan Contingent in Sector II and assured the Sector Commander that the AMISOM Force Headquarters is committed towards supporting all AMISOM contingents to realise the AMISOM Mandate.

In line with the implementation of AMISOM Concept of Operation (CONOPS) that is geared towards achieving Somalia Transition Plan, the Force Commander noted that mentorship of Somalia National Security Force (SNSF) through field training exercises and joint offensive operations against the terror group Al-Shabaab and other armed opposition groups is key towards a smooth transition from AMISOM.

He further noted that Civil Military Cooperation (CIMIC) is fundamental towards achieving the AMISOM mandate and encouraged all AMISOM contingents to put it at the forefront of their respective activities.

Brigadier Ruto on the other hand assured the Force Commander that the Kenyan contingent is fully committed towards the actualisation of the AMISOM mandate and the implementation of AMISOM CONOPS under the UN Security Council Resolution 2431 of 2018.
