Former Kiambu Governor William Kabogo has dismissed calls for a constitutional change.
The vocal leader said Kenyans are not ready for a referendum as "their most urgent needs are far away from constitutional loopholes".
Speaking on Mt Kenya TV Wednesday, Kabogo said the main objective of Kenyans having a new constitution in 2010 was to have a devolved system of governance.
“That was the main reason for this 'katiba', it is now time to make devolution work. Why should we do a referendum because a few leaders want it?” Kabogo posed.
He said problems facing Kenyans are way too many to start spending on a constitution change.
“Is the ongoing theft in the country caused by the constitution? Is the hunger Kenyans are facing because of the constitution? When did Kenyans do an audit of this constitution to say it is bad? This thing of leaders imposing things on Kenyans because of their selfish gains must end,” Kabogo said.
The former county boss also noted that if President Uhuru Kenyatta and his ‘elder brother’ Raila Odinga want to create the position of a Prime Minister, they should not benefit from such a development.
“If Uhuru and Tinga are sincere that they want to have more inclusive government by having a Prime Minister position, then that structure should apply in 2027 elections and none of them should vie or benefit from such an arrangement,” Kabogo said.
