Following the incident in which three police reservists were reportedly abducted by suspected Al-Shabaab attackers in Wajir, fresh details have since emerged detailing how the attackers escaped.
According to Xinhua news, the abduction was conducted by heavily armed militants who are believed to have crossed the border from Somalia, stormed Konton centre from all directions with their main target being the police reservists.
They are reported to have later escaped with motorbikes and Tuk-tuks.
"Al-Shabab stormed Konton centre in Wajir east in all direction targeting national police reservists in the centre at around 4:30 pm on Thursday. The police reservists fought the al-Shabab who were many in numbers while locals were fleeing the town," a police source who sought anonymity was quoted by Xinhua news.
"The police reservists after running out with ammunition of two magazines ran away. Al-Shabab kidnapped three police reservists and took with them a motorbike and a tuk-tuk belonging to area chief's brother," he added.
However, a multi-agency security operation to rescue the kidnapped reservists has since been launched.
The attack happens despite the heightened security surveillance across the country with security agencies issuing a state alert.
The incident came barely a week after the government indefinitely closed her border with the war-torn republic of Somalia in the volatile coastal Lamu region.
