A suspect has been presented in an Isiolo court where he was charged with sexually assaulting a minor who had been left in his custody.
Shukri Abdirahman allegedly defiled his six months old niece on Thursday after he was left to take care of her.
The incident took place at Bulapesa area around Isiolo town.
The suspect denied the charges of defilement when he was presented before Isiolo Principal Magistrate Evanson Ngigi.
A medical report confirmed that indeed the child was defiled.
Isiolo Sub-County Police Commander Moses Owiti claimed that the suspect had just moved in the area.
“The baby’s mother had rushed to a nearby shop and on her return, she did not find her baby. After searching in the neighbourhood, she found the baby in the suspect’s house. The baby was bleeding,” Owiti stated.
Owiti issued a stern warning against those who will be found engaging in similar incidences vowing that action will be taken against them.
Human Rights Activist Adan Hassan revealed that in most defilement cases, the perpetrators are close to the victims.
“Defilement cases are so prevalent, we are worried because many children are being defiled by people close to them,” he noted.
The suspect was released on a bond of Sh250, 000. The case will resume on November 29.
